The Artists Celebration on Saturday evening at the 30th Sooke Fine Arts Show was simply wonderful. The range of art was second to none, beautifully arranged in the huge space and was very well attended. As mentioned I have had 3 pieces accepted in to the Show. All photographs were taken on a recent expedition adventure to Svalbard. The stark environment was pristine and stunningly dramatic, seemingly untouched by humans.
"Snow and Sky" was an image taken on a flat spit of land that runs towards the ocean from the hills in the centre of Amsterdamoya Island, the site of a whaling station in the early 1600's. Looking in that direction, there was nothing to see but cold serenity, save the few rocks in the distance, and a few very stalwart birds.
"Migration Over Alkefjellet Glacier" was near the ancestral nesting location of tens of thousands of birds, some estimates say 250,000 or more pairs return here every year to reproduce. The sounds, sights and smells of the colony was a feast for the senses. The Glacier in itself was spectacular, but the sight of the countless
birds, primarily Brunnich's Guillemots, in endless streams of flight, driven by natures urgency, was awe inspiring.
"Jester - On The Brink" is an image taken from an somber setting on a pebble beach littered with the remains of 500 beluga whales hunted in the 1930's. Ours was the first expedition of the season after the long cold winter, so the bones had been rearranged by the ice and sea over several months. Nature created this dramatic sight for me to capture on Bourbonhamna.
